In 2016, I had the opportunity to visit and interview Senator Bernie Sanders (I, in fact, met him at a rally) in Vermont.
I’ve been following his campaign for years now, and it’s been a constant source of fascination for me, because he’s such a principled, upstanding, progressive man.
I don’t think that we can ever fully understand what motivates someone to vote for a socialist.
And that’s why I’m so excited to see Bernie Sanders finally win this year’s Democratic primary.
Bernie Sanders is an old-school socialist who believes that there should be no limits on the freedoms of the people, and he is not afraid to put his faith in the power of the state to help solve our country’s problems.
Bernie’s policies are rooted in the ideas of economic freedom, social justice, and public health.
His plan to create a $15 minimum wage, universal healthcare, and free college tuition for all Americans would be a game-changer for millions of working-class people.
And it would be good for the country.
Bernie is the only candidate in this race who believes we need a $17 minimum wage.
That’s a massive step in the right direction.
In fact, I believe that Bernie Sanders will be the most progressive candidate on the ballot in 2020.
We can’t ignore the fact that the Democrats are the party of big money.
I was impressed by how quickly Senator Sanders took on Wall Street, the financial industry, and the billionaire class.
And I was thrilled to see him fight against the massive corruption of the super PACs.
And we can’t overlook his long-standing record of progressive policies, such as ending student debt, protecting reproductive rights, and providing health care to all Americans.
Bernie believes in working people and the middle class.
He believes that we need to raise the minimum wage to a living wage of $15 an hour, and that we must also end the disastrous trade deals and other giveaways that have created so many working people’s poverty.
He’s also been one of the first to take on corporate special interests, including Wall Street.
He has fought for our health care system, and helped bring the Affordable Care Act into law.
And he is a tireless champion for our veterans.
In the midst of all the great problems facing the country, he has been a tirekiller for the poor, working families, and marginalized communities.
Bernie stands for a strong middle class, which means he wants to bring down the cost of living for everyone.
He also believes that our country should be a place where everyone has a fair shot, not a place that offers you the same advantages as a wealthy person.
He is not only a true progressive, but he’s also a great guy who has a proven track record of working with his constituents.
In my mind, Bernie Sanders can be our next president.
And for me it’s time for him to run for office and get the party behind him.
I’m proud to endorse Bernie Sanders as the Democratic nominee for president in 2020, and I look forward to working with him and his campaign to make sure that our party elects a new leader who will make the country a better place for everyone, not just a few.
